| Bagot Memorials Fund |
Generations of Bagots lie in the chancel and churchyard of the ancient church which is just west of the Orangery. The nave has 13th century arcades on round piers. In the chancel, a little later in date, one of three interesting tabletop tombs shows Sir Lewis Bagot (great-grandson to Sir John) lying surrounded by his three wives; their dogs and nineteen children at their feet. The first wife, who was married and died while still a child, peeps over her husband's shoulder. Another tomb shows the sculptured effigies of Sir Lewis's grandson, Richard, and his wife. Above it hangs a late-15th century helmet bearing a carved wood goat's head crest. The are many memorials to the Bagot family in Blithfield Church. Early memorials include: Tomb of Isabella Bagot, wife of Richard Bagot Esq and daughter of Sir Robert Aston, Knight, of Tixall. Died 1477. Tomb of John Bagot and his two wives. Died 1480. Tomb of John Bagot An altar monument to Thomas Bagot. Died 1541. An altar monument to Richard Bagot, Armiger. Died 1596. During the early part of 2006, as the result the fall of part of one of the wall monuments, a significant restoration has taken place, partly enabled through family generosity and partly through a significant grant from the Staffordshire Environmental Fund, for which we are very grateful. There is still some more money to be found and any donations should be sent to Nancy Lady Bagot, The Peacock Flat, Blithfield Hall. Cheques should be made payable to the Bagot Memorials Fund. |
